Please familiarize yourself with the rules of my classroom.
Office Hours – I will be available after school every Tuesday afternoon in room 212 if you need extra help. If you need help but cannot come on Tuesdays, you can schedule an appointment with me!
Grading – Each quarterly average will consist of approximately ten assignments.
Classwork, homework, and participation will all be factored into the quarterly average.
These categories are usually weighted as follows:
Major & Minor Assessments = 90%
Major Assessments (100 - 200 points): Essays & Projects & Long Responses
Minor Assessments (10-75 points): Quizzes & Homeworks & Short Responses
Preparedness & Participation = 10%
Preparedness (and supplies) - You will read and write in my class.
Every day you should start class by putting your English binder (reserved for only English and full of paper), the text we're reading, your IRB, and your pen on your desk. I should never have to ask you to take these items out.
You will also need a notebook in addition to your binder; it's special.
Participation - Your participation grade takes into account several factors.
Participation is not just about speaking often; it’s also about allowing others to speak. Also, there is a difference between speaking and participating.
Independent Reading Time - If we're reading our IRBs, you may not put your head down. Participate by reading with your head up. You should also jot down one note about what you're thinking. Be an active reader!
Please don't use our reading time to use the bathroom. This is some of our most important class time!
Journals - You'll be writing in a journal or notebook a few times a week. We'll talk about this more in class, but I will never read your entries; I will only flip through the pages to see that you've completed them. That being said, it's easy to see when someone has recopied Social Studies notes or song lyrics. Those do not count as journal entries.
Make sure that each entry begins with the date.
If your journals are not dated, you cannot receive credit for your journals. If you don't fill the page with your thoughts, you cannot receive full-credit for an entry.
Attendance & Tardiness –
Assignments –
You must hand papers to me directly. Do not leave your papers in my mailbox or on my desk. If you do, there is a chance they may be lost. Hand them to me. Do not e-mail them to me. Hand them to me. Also, hand them to me.
Other very important information –
Plagiarism – “It is standard policy of the English department of Herricks High School to assign serious consequences to any act of cheating or plagiarism. Students who plagiarize will receive a zero on that assignment, a call home to their parents, and a disciplinary referral with the dean.”
Daily Grade –Each day you will begin class with four points. If you are late or not prepared for class, you lose a point. If you are disrespectful to someone, you lose your points. If I see your phone, you lose your points. If you break any of my rules, you lose your points. So…don’t break my rules! Keep all your points! Let’s have an amazing year!

Attendance & Tardiness –
- I expect you to be in class on time. Excessive lateness will result in detention. Unexcused absences will result in detention. You are not on time if your bag is in the room and you are not. You need to be on time, not your bag.
- If you are absent, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to hand in work that was due and to find out what work you missed. If you come to class and ask me what you missed, it is likely too late. Check the website. Call someone in our class. Don't wait until you come back to find out what you missed! This is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! All extra copies of handouts are put in your class' basket, so check the basket for any handouts you may have missed.
Assignments –
- Assignments are due at the beginning of class. (If you are submitting to google classroom, you must submit the assignment before our class period begins).
- You may not print a paper at the start of class.
- Ten points will be deducted for each day an assignment is late.
- Assignments that are more than ten days late cannot receive a grade higher than a 65.
You must hand papers to me directly. Do not leave your papers in my mailbox or on my desk. If you do, there is a chance they may be lost. Hand them to me. Do not e-mail them to me. Hand them to me. Also, hand them to me.
Other very important information –
- You will respect each person in our classroom, including any guest that might visit us. If I feel that you have disrespected someone in my room, I will write you a disciplinary referral. I will not tolerate bullying. I will not tolerate rude behavior. I will not tolerate being disrespectful.
- No electronic devices are allowed in my class. This includes ipods, cell phones, blackberries, or any such electronic device. Seriously. This is your warning. Your device will be confiscated. Leave it in your bag. If I see your phone you will get a zero for the day.
- Computer error is no excuse for missing work.
- You may not eat during my class. Don't hide chips in your bag and sneak them one at a time. Eat before my class. Eat after my class. Do not eat in my class. If you do not have a lunch period, you may eat in my class, but you may not go to the cafeteria to get your lunch, you must bring it from home. I bring my lunch from home every day; you can do it too.
